Honeywell has chosen Cote as the successor of Lawrence Bossidy, following the AlliedSignal acquisition of Honeywell and the European Union’s denial the Honeywell merger plan together with General Electric. Cote was appointed CEO as president and CEO, as well as a director on the board in February 19th 2002. He was appointed as chairman on July 1, 2002.

In 2009, Cote was invited to the White House to meet the President for a briefing on the US economic recovery plan and in November 2009, he was one of 12 businesspeople asked by the White House to host the US-India CEO Forum, which Cote and Ratan Tata co-chaired. In February 2010, Cote was selected by President Obama to be on the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, more commonly known as the Simpson Bowles Commission.

Then, in November of 1999 Cote became a part of TRW as COO and president. He established his Six Sigma management system to minimize manufacturing errors. Then, in February of 2001 Cote became CEO and then chair of TRW’s board. Cote was the one who initiated the establishment of Velocium, the TRW subsidiary Velocium that manufactured ultra-high-speed semiconductors.

Cote was hired by General Electric full-time in November 1976, working for more than 20 years. He made the transition from part-time production job in the General Electric aircraft-engine plant in New Hampshire to a full-time auditing position at a different GE plant located in Massachusetts. The year 1985 saw his performance in an exchange that he had with the Chairman Jack Welch became the catalyst to Cote’s rise within GE. Welch made Cote three levels up in management. Throughout his time at GE Appliances He held positions in manufacturing marketing, finance and strategic planning, as well as general management before becoming the CEO for GE Appliances in 1996.

In February 2002, Cote announced he would be leaving TRW. Reportedly, the news surprised employees and some executives, who learned of Cote’s departure hours before the announcement.
